How to optimise images on WordPress?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when creating a new website is they do not optimise their images. This is bad for a number of reasons including page load speed and SEO.

There are various ways to optimise images on WordPress for free either by using a plugin or a web tool plus some basic tips to help you make the most of your website images.

Here are some quick and easy way to optimise your images on WordPress to help improve your websites speed, performance and SEO score.

Use a plugin

There are a number of free WordPress plugins which will help optimise your images. Some offer more features than others, however, it all depends on what features you need.

Use a web tool

One of the best free web tools we have found for compressing and optimising your images is TinyJPG. Using this free tool you can reduce the size of your files by more than 70% in just a few clicks.

Optimise for your website

It is also best practice to optimise your images for use on your website. These simple steps will help with website speed and SEO performance.

  • Use relevant sized images. If a content area on your website is 300x300px there is no need to use an image which is 2000x2000px. It is wasting resources and should be resized and optimised.
  • Always add an ALT tag to your images. This shows the search engines what the image is about and is great for SEO.
